Character Education Survey 2019-20

NatCen is conducting a study to explore the approaches adopted by schools to develop pupil character and virtues, their understanding of the area, and the activities they use to promote character development.

What is character education?

Character education generally refers to any activities that aim to develop desirable character traits in children and young people, including (among others) resilience, hard-work, self-confidence, honesty and curiosity.

Why take part?

This study aims to understand the provision of character education in schools based on proven methodologies which offer the greatest value for money. Your participation will help to improve our understanding of different approaches to delivering character education; the challenges facing the implementation of character education in schools; and, we hope, to ultimately improve the quality of character education provided across schools and institutions in the UK.

What’s involved?

You will be asked to fill in an online questionnaire, which should take no more than 15 minutes to complete. This questionnaire will ask you about your current role in the school; your understandings of character education; any activities or programmes to promote character education in your school/institution; and any barriers to implementing character education in your school/institution.

How will you deal with my personal information?

We will treat the information you give us in the strictest confidence under the EU General Data Protection Regulation 2018 and GDPR. You can find out more about our credentials and who we are here and how we protect your personal information here.

Why have I been selected to take part?

You have been selected to take part because your school works or has previously worked with The Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues (JCCV), University of Birmingham; and/or because your school is a member of the Character Education Subject Association (ACE).
