ABS Evaluation (2)

About the study

The National Lottery Community Fund has asked us to evaluate A Better Start. We will be looking at if and how A Better Start has improved children’s lives in Blackpool, Bradford, Lambeth, Nottingham, Southend-on-Sea and finding out about families’ experiences of the programme.

In Phase 1, we will review documents and talk to people who know about A Better Start to make sure we understand what is happening in the A Better Start areas and that our research can find out about the difference A Better Start has made.

We will ask people about:

  • what A Better Start is
  • how they think A Better Start helps children and families
  • what research has already been done about A Better Start
  • what information we can use to find out about the difference A Better Start has made
  • what they want to learn from our research

Who is carrying out the research?

NatCen (the National Centre for Social Research), the University of Sussex, RSM, Research in Practice and the National Children’s Bureau.

Why take part?

We want to understand what is happening in the A Better Start areas and make sure that our research can find out about the difference that A Better Start has made. We will be talking to people who know about A Better Start before we decide on our final plans for the research.

What will taking part involve?

You might have been invited to take part in a workshop or discussion in Phase 1. This will involve taking part in a discussion with other people in your area, including A Better Start staff, parents or other people who work with the A Better Start partnership or services. The discussion will be online and will be led by a NatCen researcher. You will be told in advance how long the discussion will last and what you’ll be talking about.

Why have I been selected to take part?

The director of your local A Better Start partnership has told us that you are a good person to talk to about the activity and/or research and evaluation happening in your area.

Is participation voluntary?

Yes, participation is completely voluntary. You do not have to take part in the online discussion, and you may choose to stop participating at any point without giving a reason. You can also choose not to talk about certain topics.

Whether you decide to take part in a group discussion or not will in no way affect you or your local A Better Start partnership.

Do I have to answer all the questions?

It’s totally up to you what you say in the online discussion. You do not need to answer any questions or talk about any topics that you do not feel comfortable with.

What will happen to any information I give?

We will bring together the views of everyone who has taken part in Phase 1 to decide our final plans for the national evaluation. We will write up our final plans for the National Lottery Community Fund. When we write up our final plans, we won’t use any names or report individual people’s opinions.
