People in the Lead

Family in kitchen

Tell us what you think about local services for children aged under four and families in your area.

What is the project about?

This is a project to find out about a programme that works with young children and families in your local area called A Better Start. The following partnerships are taking part:

What are we trying to find out?

The Big Lottery Fund is supporting NatCen to work closely with the A Better Start programme in your area to find out:

  • How services can come together to make a difference to children and families in your area
  • How local residents can be involved in developing services that benefit children and families
  • What helps people to access services and activities
  • What makes it easy or difficult to get involved

Who do we want to speak to?

We would like to speak to:

  • Members of the local community, including volunteers and parents/carers with babies and young children – you do not have to be involved in any activities to take part.
  • Professionals and staff who provide services locally, including those who work in Children’s Centres, early help and support, family support staff, healthcare and community and neighbourhood services.

What will taking part involve?

Members of the local community

An interviewer from Public Knowledge will come to your home to invite you to take part in a short survey.

  • It will be a 20-minute survey.
  • You will receive a £5 voucher to say thank you for your time
  • Everything you say will be kept confidential and anonymous. Your details won’t be shared with any other individual or organisation.

Professionals and work staff

An email will be sent to you to inform you of the upcoming survey. This email will give you the option to withdraw from the research and any further communications from us. We will then send out another email with a link to the online survey.

  • The survey should take around 20 minutes to complete
  • Everything you say will be kept confidential and anonymous. Your details won’t be shared with any other individual or organisation.

There’s no need to prepare for either survey. We just want to hear what you think.

When do we want to speak to you?

Local community: An interviewer from Public Knowledge will come to your home either in early August or between September and November 2017.

Professionals and staff: You will receive the email containing the online survey link between November 2017 and January 2018.

What happens after the interviews and group discussions?

We will combine together the responses from everyone who takes part and write a report on what can be done to involve people in Better Start sites. Everything you say will be kept confidential and anonymous. Your details won’t be shared with any other individual or organisation.

How we protect your information

We will treat the information you give us in the strictest confidence under the Data Protection Act 1998

You will never receive any junk mail as a result of speaking to us.
