In order to encourage students to take part in the Student Income and Expenditure Study we gave them the option of answering questions about their finances online, rather than over the phone.
The information from this study will provide crucial information to the Government about students’ income.
By making it easy for students to do the survey whenever it suited them, we got a really positive response, with around two thirds of the 5,000 students who took part completing the questionnaire online.
Students also completed an online diary to tell us about their day-to-day spending over a week on expenses that would be hard to measure in a questionnaire, such as photocopying and going out.
The information we collect from students helps the Government understand
- how much money students get from grants, loans, parents and part-time work
- what they're spending on tuition fees, housing and day-to-day costs
- how much debt students are coming out with at the end of their studies.
